Tompkins Appliance Service (509) 529-3185
Duane Tompkins and Helen Locati were raised in Walla Walla and both graduated from St. Patrick’s High School in 1953. Duane joined the U.S. Coast Guard as an electrician’s mate and served from 1953-1957. Helen attended St. Mary’s Nursing School and became an R.N.
Duane and Helen were married in 1956. After Duane’s discharge from the U.S. Cost Guard, he enrolled in Edison Tech in Seattle and studied major appliance repair and earned his degree 18 months later. He went to work as an apprentice for Appliance Service Station and continued to work there until 1966. In 1966, Duane and Helen moved back to Walla Walla and started a business of their own and raised their four children.
Tompkins Appliance Service started on a small scale out of the house they rented at 338 W. Chestnut. Duane worked nights at Birdseye and ran service calls during the day until the business was built up enough to support his family. A few years later Duane and Helen built a home and moved the business to Rt. 5, Box 235 where he had more room to work and expanded the business to include over the counterpart sales to the do-it-yourselfers.
In 1979, Duane again felt the need for expansion and purchased the old Tomlison Dairy Mart at 614 S. 9th.
In 1980, the growth was about to continue as their son Greg asked if he could join the family business. Greg then enrolled in Lewis-Clark State College in Lewiston, Idaho and received his degree in 1982 and went to work full time for the company. Duane became ill in 1983, and passed away in November 1984. Helen, along with Greg and his wife Nancy ran the business on 9th Street until 2001, when the business transitioned to in-home repair and parts sales with no storefront.
Greg and Nancy, married in 1984, raised their three children all the while running Tompkins Appliance and a local Laundromat, T-N-T Suds, which they opened in 1991.
In 2013, Greg welcomed in the third generation of the family, with the addition of his daughter Megan and son Michael. Megan joined the business in January 2013 after switching her degree from pharmacy to business management. Michael moved back to Walla Walla in June 2013 after receiving his bachelor’s degree from Centenary College in Louisiana. Michael and his wife Becky are also raising a daughter.
Greg, much like his father Duane, felt the time was right for expansion. With the addition of Michael and Megan, Tompkins Appliance is once again investing in the community. In April 2014, Tompkins Appliance will open up to the public at 270 E. Boeing. The new building will include over the counterpart sales, in-home repair, and in shop repair.
