Some Quick Answers to Common Questions

What can Tompkins Appliances Repair?

We can service any of the following household appliances:
Washers, Dryers, Ranges, (Gas and Electric) Refrigerators, Freezers, Dishwashers Disposals, Microwaves

My dryer is taking too long to dry my clothes

Is dryer producing heat? If yes, the first thing you would want to do is remove the vent that is connected to the back of the dryer , leave it pulled out from the wall and run one or two loads. If the dryer dry’s in the normal amount of time the problem is in your vent system and not the dryer. You will either need to have the venting cleaned or replaced.

Will I Damage a Refrigerator or Freezer If I Store It in the Garage?

Only if it is a self-defrosting refrigerator and the temperature in your garage drops below 50 degrees Fahrenheit. Then, it is possible that the oil could thicken and cause premature compressor failure. Also, refrigerator/freezer units often won’t keep food frozen when the temperature of the garage drops below 35 degrees Fahrenheit (1.6 Celsius).

Why Would My Washer Be Using Cool Water During The Warm Cycle?

Your washer is actually combining hot and cold water to create the warm water and during certain times of the year cold water gets colder. So, during the colder months, you can expect your warm cycle to run cooler. You might also want to check to see if there is a restriction in the hot water.

Why does my washer smell musty or like an old fish tank ?

The two most common causes of ODOR in a washer are the use of too much detergent and the temperature of the water is too cold. This causes a buildup of odor-causing residue (and a great place for some other nasty stuff to grow). We have a great product called Affresh™. You use one tablet a month and it keeps your machine clean and fresh by getting rid of the odor-causing residue. It’s also septic tank safe. We carry Affresh™ in our store.

Which brands and models are Tompkins trained to repair?

GE,LG, Bosch, Whirlpool, Maytag, Kitchen Aid, Amana, Frigidaire, Speed Queen,  Sub Zero, Viking, Wolf, Sharp and Many More

Should I change the fill hoses on my washer, and if so how often?

Yes, you should, and I suggest every 3 to 5 years with inspection of your hoses every few months (look for bulging). When you change your hoses I recommend either using stainless steel or the new Industrial Grade Hose.

What should the temperature of my refrigerator/freezer be?

Did you know freezers will operate more efficiently when they’re at least 2/3 full? Home refrigerators should read 37 – 38 degrees Fahrenheit with the freezer temperature at zero.

things to do when away for extended periods of time

Turn off water to washing machines and ice makers
